Safe Food List

“Safe” Commercially packaged foods. Starred if available at 29 Commissary as of 2013.

The bar here is set pretty low I realize, but everyone has to start somewhere. This is a place for me to record food items that don’t contain hydrogenated/industrial oils, HFCS, MSG, un fermented soy products, and other suspect ingredients. While sugar is still bad, it’s a step up from HFCS so I’m leaving it in for now although eventually I would like to get proficient enough with learning what to eat to take them off the list. This is just a very basic, evolving guide to help other people (especially military families) begin the transition from SAD. I make note if I have seen a coupon for the product and if it made WAPF’s approved food list as well. Ingredients in italics means some debate attached.

Fish, Canned

*Crown Prince Kipper Snacks. Ingredients: SMOKED FILLETS OF KIPPERED HERRING, SALT.

[W]*King Oscar Sardines in Olive Oil. Ingredients: SARDINES, OLIVE OIL, SALT.

Jalapeños

[C] La Victoria Nacho Sliced Jalapeños, Hot. Ingredients: Jalapeño Peppers, Water, Distilled Vinegar, Salt and Calcium Chloride.

Condiments

*Cholula Hot Sauce. Ingredients: WATER, PEPPERS (ARBOL AND PIQUIN), SALT, VINEGAR, SPICES, XANTHAN GUM.

*Ajishima Foods Nori Komi Furkikake (rice seasoning). Ingredients: SESAME SEED, SALT, SUGAR, SEAWEED. note: made in China by a Japanese factory.

*Gulden’s Spicy Brown Mustard. Ingredients:

*San-J Tamari (gluten free soy sauce). Ingredients: WATER, SOYBEANS, SALT, ALCOHOL (TO PRESERVE FRESHNESS). note: non-GMO and gluten free certified. Soy comes from a fermented source.

Nut Butters

*[C] Planters Natural Peanut Butter. Ingredients: ROASTED PEANUTS, SUGAR, PALM OIL, SALT.

Salsa

[C] La Victoria Thick’n Chunky Mild, *Medium, and Hot. Ingredients: Tomatoes, Tomato Puree (Water and Tomato Paste), Onions, Jalapeño Peppers, Green Chiles, Salt, Distilled Vinegar, Garlic, Xanthan Gum, Paprika and Spice.

*Muir Glen Organic Medium Salsa. Ingredients: Tomatoes in juice, tomato puree (tomato paste, water), onion, green bell pepper, anaheim pepper, garlic, jalapeno peppers, cilantro, lime juice, jalapeno pepper puree, sea salt, vinegar, naturally derived citric acid, naturally derived calcium chloride.

Sauce

*[C] Bertolli Portobello Mushroom with Merlot. Ingredients: TOMATO PUREE (WATER, TOMATO PASTE), DICED TOMATOES, PORTOBELLO MUSHROOMS, MERLOT WINE, ONIONS, BERTOLLI OLIVE OIL, SUGAR, SALT, GARLIC, SPICES.

Vinegars

*Fattorie Giacobazzi Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. Ingredients: WINE VINEGAR, CONCENTRATED GRAPE MUST, COOKED GRAPE MUST.

*Marukan Seasoned Gourmet Rice Vinegar. Ingredients: RICE VINEGAR (WATER, RICE), SUGAR, SALT.
